The story
Founded in 1131 by Roger II, by tradition to fulfil a vow made during a storm, it is the first of the great Norman mosaic projects: the apse mosaics, with Christ Pantocrator, predate those of Monreale by forty years. The twin-towered façade and 15th-century porch close the square. It forms part of the UNESCO site 'Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedral Churches of Cefalù and Monreale'.
