The story
Founded in 1789 and opened in 1795, it is one of the oldest and richest botanical gardens in Europe. The monumental core, designed by Léon Dufourny, includes the Neoclassical Gymnasium, the Calidarium and the Tepidarium. The climate allows tropical and subtropical species to be grown in open ground. Species now common in Italy, such as the mandarin and the loquat, were acclimatised here.
