The story
Erected in 1535 to celebrate Charles V's triumphal return from the Tunis campaign, it was destroyed by an explosion in 1667 and rebuilt in 1669 with its distinctive pyramidal majolica roof. On the western front, four telamons depict defeated Moors, their arms mutilated. It marks the monumental entrance to the Cassaro, the historic axis running through the centre to the sea.
