The story
A natural inlet that formed the original landing place of the Phoenician city: the Greek name Panormos, 'all harbour', derives from this bay's exceptional shelter. Progressively silted and filled over the centuries, it is now a small marina ringed by a pedestrian walkway. On its southern side stands the church of Santa Maria della Catena, named after the chain that once closed the entrance.
