The story
Originally a sea inlet, later filled in, the square was for centuries the city's main public space: the setting for tournaments, festivals, executions and Inquisition burnings. At its centre lies the Garibaldi Garden, laid out in 1863 by Giovan Battista Filippo Basile, home to monumental Ficus macrophylla among the largest in Europe, with spectacular aerial roots and buttresses.
