The story

Designed by Giovan Battista Filippo Basile and completed by his son Ernesto, it opened in 1897 with Verdi's Falstaff. At over seven thousand square metres it is Italy's largest opera house. Closed in 1974 for refurbishment, it stood unusable for twenty-three years and only reopened in 1997. The guided tour covers the auditorium, the royal box, the foyer and the Pompeian room with its elliptical acoustics.
