The story
Designed by Ernesto Basile between 1899 and 1900 for the Florios, it was meant to be a sanatorium for lung disease and was converted into a luxury hotel before it even opened. The Sala Basile preserves frescoes by Ettore De Maria Bergler with female figures among flowers and trees, among the most celebrated works of Italian Art Nouveau. The park slopes down to the sea with a Neoclassical folly.
