The story
Founded in 1485 by the Observant Franciscans on the site of the emirs' palace, it retains a Chiaramonte Gothic façade, a coffered wooden ceiling, paintings by Pietro Novelli and stuccoes from the Serpotta workshop. On the outer flank opens the so-called 'escape hole', through which two patriots fled in 1860 after the failed anti-Bourbon uprising. The adjoining convent houses the State Archives.
