The story
In 1624, during a devastating plague, remains attributed to Rosalia Sinibaldi, a Norman noblewoman who withdrew here in the 12th century, were found in this cave. Carried in procession, the relics coincided with the end of the epidemic: Rosalia became Palermo's patron saint. The sanctuary is built into the cave itself, with water dripping from the rock collected in channels. It is the goal of the Acchianata pilgrimage, on the night of 3-4 September.
