The story
Built between 1612 and 1645 for the Theatine order, it occupies one corner of the Quattro Canti. The three-aisled interior is punctuated by colossal monolithic columns and covered in frescoes, marmi mischi and stucco. Beneath the church lies a crypt containing the earlier church of Santa Maria della Provvidenza. From the dome and terraces you look down on the crossing of the Cassaro and Via Maqueda.
