The story
Built between 1173 and 1178 for archbishop Walter Ophamil, it retains a three-aisled basilica plan with apses banded in lava stone. It is best known as the setting of the Sicilian Vespers: the anti-Angevin revolt which, beginning here at the hour of vespers on Easter Monday 1282, reshaped Mediterranean politics. It stands inside the Sant'Orsola cemetery, opened in 1782.
