Saint Lucy's Day, the day without bread

The event

On 13 December, Palermo eats neither bread nor pasta. Tradition remembers a famine ended by the arrival of a grain ship: the wheat was eaten boiled as it was, and that is today's cuccìa, sweetened with ricotta. Instead of bread people eat arancine, and fry shops across the city work from morning. It is not a festival with a programme: it is a day when a whole city eats the same way.
